Looking for Research Material?
By: Bro. Joshua Seidl, SSP
Here are a few of the sources I have used in writing Hawk Dancer and for my upcoming novel. These are
excellent, up to date books related to the issue of inculturation regarding Native Americans and the
Churches in America. I provide direct ordering links to the publishers of the books listed below. If you want to order through a regular book store
instead of on line - click the link anyway and you can print out or copy down the title, publisher and ISBN number to take to your favorite book seller.
There are links to Vatican Documents in the next column.

There is another resource of importance, a DVD titled Unrepentant produced by the organization
Hidden From History. A review and picture of that follows this book list.
Let the book sellers below know you saw their product on this web site:

Mission – Journal of Mission Studies, Volume 1 – No 2 – 1994

“Mission, St. Paul University, 223 Main Street, Ottawa, Ontario in Canada, K1S,” put out this periodical.
I bought my copy while on retreat at the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre in Espanola Ontario. You can find a
direct link to their web site on my ministry pages (click at the bottom of this page). The 207 page study cost me
a mere $5.00 Canada.

From the introduction: “In October 1993, for the first time in history, a meeting of international Jesuits
working among indigenous peoples was organized. A sample group of 40 … [Jesuits] came together to analyze the history,
the present and the future of this historic ministry within the Society.”

Developing an Australian Theology
Editor: Peter Malone
St Pauls Publications, 1999, Strathford NSW 2135, Australia. ISBN 1-876295-13-9
Produced by the Society of St. Paul in Australia, the book’s title self describes the content. It is a study
of Church development in Australia. I recommend the book because of Elizabeth Pike’s study, Reconciliation, or
Conciliation through Restoration?
I do not know if this title is available in the USA. Click this line to go Society of St. Paul in Australia to order this book. Although the constitution of the Society of St. Paul states
that we are to promote indigenous culture, we have only scratched the surface. Perhaps someday we will have a consortium of material
from our other SSP Provinces on inculturation and Indigenous People. India, for example, has taken a lead in these
areas of theology and mission and so have a number of African countries.
That the World May Believe
The development of Papal social Thought on Aboriginal Rights
by: Michael Storge ------ Editions Paulines, Sherbrooke, Quebec Canada, J1E 2B9, 1992 ISBN2-89039-549-9
This is a very well worn book in my collection.
Stogre reaches back to the high middle ages setting the stage on Papal thought towards rights and relationships
with non-Christian Countries in general and then proceeds with wealth of Papal Bulls and letters from the 1430’s and
on through the writings and speeches of the late great Pope John Paul II. Purchase the above book from the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre Canadian SSP does not respond to inquiries.
The Popes and Slavery by Joel S. Panzer
St Pauls/Alba House, Staten Island, NY 10413 - 1996, ISBN 0-8189-0764-9
The book is generally used by those investigating African Slave trade. The Papal documents range primarily
between 1430-1890, and geared to slavery worldwide. The major European powers that established their colonies in the
Americas indeed made wide practice of enslaving the Indigenous population. Click here to order this book from the Society of St. Paul and if you get the chance, tell them Bro. Joshua sent you.
When a Pope Asks Forgiveness, The Mea Culpa's of John Paul II by Luigi Accattoli,
translated by Jordon Aumann, OP
I wish this book to be in every rectory, religious house, mission, and any other form of Catholic institute. This is
a collection of the apologies issued by Pope John Paul II on behalf of the Church and church leaders who wronged or
persecuted other races and religions through the ages.

Only the strong and forthright person or organization can admit error and seek forgiveness. The weak, on the
other hand, make excuses, cover up or increase their intolerance when error is exposed.

Pages 157-164 examine the Pope’s apologies to the Native Americans. A number of North American Church leaders
have since followed suit; most have not. To that extent, a very noticeable number of clergy, religious life superiors
and members and other Gospel leaders or teachers continue to express open hostilities towards indigenous culture and
people. The hope lies in the fact that the Pope did apologize and issued other papers and speeches promoting Indigenous
culture. In time, this generation will pass away – the hardened of heart, like a puff of smoke, will be gone tomorrow.
These words will then become the norm in society. Click here to order this book from the Society of St. Paul.
Unrepentant
Kevin Annett and Canada's Genocide, a DVD film by Kevin Annett, Louie Lawless and Lori O'Rorke
(110 minutes). Available through www.hiddenfromhistory.org -- Copyright 2007.
50,000 NATIVE CHILDREN NEVER MADE IT HOME
FROM SCHOOL: Over a hundred thousand of Canada’s Aboriginal children were forced from their families and into
boarding school. The Canadian term is Indian Residential Schools. Half of them died between 1890 and 1984. According
to Kevin Annett, the figures were consistent for each year. That is about 513 students a year.

Kevin Annett learned of the atrocities from survivor victims while assigned as an ordained minister of the United
Churches of Canada. He asked his Church to admit and identify the graves. He was consequently de-frocked of his ministry
and subjected to court trials without due process of law or actually being charged with any crime.

Hidden From History - (Rev. Kevin Annett)
Love and Death in the Valley
--Kevin Annett
In this startling book,
Love and Death in the Valley, - (Rev. Kevin Annett)
Kevin Annett describes how he discovered almost by accident evidence of the history of incredible abuse over more than a century
in the "religious schools" run by the churches and supposedly created to educate coastal Indian children.
In so doing, he exposed himself to an unbelievable inquisition and persecution at the hands of his employer the United Church. On more than one occasion,
physically threatened and attacked by anonymous thugs, he was denied recourse by the courts while being subjected to a farcical kangaroo court devised by
the United Church of Canada.
He is afforded little recognition much less help by the Canadian government which, extending back to the 19th Century, was itself complicit in the
abominable history of the Church's abuses (and those of the Anglican and Roman Catholic Church "schools" as well).
Today, after 14 years of struggle against enormous adversaries, Kevin Annett has attained a degree of legitimacy in his quest for justice. He has written
two books, and written, directed and produced a documentary film, "Unrepentant," which won the award in the "Best Director" category at the New York
Independent Film Festival in 2006.
Kevin Annett's greatest achievement is not only that he engaged such colossal forces, but that he lays bare the guilt that he insists we must all bear,
as did the German people following the Nazi pogroms.
We are equally guilty, Kevin Annett insists, all of us who - as part of the European invasion of the Western World - strove (almost succeeding) to
annihilate most of this Hemisphere's 100 million people!
As Martin Luther King claimed on behalf of 22 million black Americans, only when we collectively turn from denial and acknowledge our guilt, can true
peace and freedom be declared for this country, this continent, and this hemisphere.
Kevin Annett is worthy of the legacy of Martin Luther King.
The Order of St. James
There is a Rule and Constitution for the Order of St. James
serving Indigenous Peoples within the context of indigenous cultures. This is
the same order of Priests and Brothers found within the novel Hawk Dancer.

Research Short Cuts
Direct to the Vatican

I am Bro. Joshua. This article contains links direct to official Vatican documents regarding
inculturation and Indigenous People. There are well over 130 references. I have selected a few of
those documents to share with you from my other research projects. It takes a lot of time to go through
each document, a task I have not accomplished; at least not as of yet. I hope those of you seeking sound
information straight form the official sources will find these links useful and will reduce your own
research time. Let me know of other Vatican documents you find not listed here that you think will be
helpful for others. Email me, and let me know why you think it is useful.

All of these references have been produced as of or since the Second Vatican Council. I am sure
many of you have wearied of the neo-Vatican II experts who have go on endlessly of why their own self-serving
agenda was born of the Spirit of Vatican II. You found out or at least suspect some of these claims. You may
have asked or been tempted to ask the neo-Liturgicalist and Reformer, “Show that to me in writing.”

Well, dear faithful ones, here it is in writing.

Inculturation

The Synod Fathers frequently emphasized the importance of inculturation for any authentic Christian life in Oceania.
The process of inculturation is the gradual way in which the Gospel is incarnated in the various cultures. …
Inculturation is born out of respect for both the Gospel and the culture in which it is proclaimed and welcomed.

The noble task of building a better Mexico, with greater justice and solidarity, demands the cooperation of all. In

From these principles of a missionary, inculturated , paschal and local Church and these native communities of which
I am part through my blood and pastoral activity, I suggest some concrete proposals: 1) let’s study in-depth our
inculturation efforts among the indigenous people and Afro-American people, even as an answer to the growing
globalization which threatens the social and cultural identity. 2) Let’s denounce the current and historical taking
away of land from the legitimate owners and the destruction of their crop. Let’s try to recover them as an integral
pastoral commitment. 3) Let’s make sure that the indigenous Catholics become their own promoters and evangelizers.

Despite various international commitments, children remain especially vulnerable to violations of the right to

The big blue button below with the RED background lets you read portions of CLOUDBURST, the second book I wrote.
Two Great Novels
on inculturation by: Joshua Seidl, SSP
Hawk Dancer & Cloudburst are entertaining novels that draw heavily on the philosophies presented in over a dozen speeches
and writings from Pope John Paul II and from the Vatican Documents listed above. Bro. Joshua pulled together stories of Native and Non-Native people he
knew whose lives are reflected in one manner or another by these Church documents and modern American history. He drew inspiration from the Pauline
(St. Pauls Publishing, USA & Editions Paulines, Canada) and other publications presented on this research and resource page.
Click the cover icon of Hawk Dancer for ordering information.
The novels are set within the Northern Great Lakes region. Annunciation Monastery outside of the Village of Birch Clump
in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is the birth place of a Native American (Indian) Catholic order of Franciscan Friars called The Congregation of St.
James. This so far fictional Order is the vehicle by which Bro. Joshua floats his ideas and ideals about inculturation and the promotion of
indigenous cultures within the Churches and society at large. Real life progressive changes and set backs in this field are recorded along with plausible
goals leaders in faith can achieve in our age.
Artistic decorating tip:
Purchase both novels from Publish America and Save $12.00. Scan both covers into your computer paint shop or photo shop.
Resize the pictures to about 8 x 10 inches and save at 200 to 300 dpi. Print on durable card stock or photo paper and frame, or tack on the wall as a minuature
frameless poster. (Art work, by the way, is by Kathy Johnson.)
Both prints compliment pracitcally any decor. They are particularly suited for parochial and ministry offices as a means to
promote cultural diversity, peace & justice issues, Native Ministry offices, schools and CCD class rooms. The make excellent framed or un framed prints
for use at at home. The natural look of birch bark found in the northern pristine forests can hardly clash with current or projected decorating. At the
same time, the floral design stands out in an unabtrusive manner complimenting contemporary and tradition tastes.
Have a freind work on this for you if you don't have personal access to a scaner or computer. The printing cost at home or
office should easly be under a dollar, or two at the most.
Not only will you be satisfied with the results, it is a way to tell others about the books should they ask you where you
obtained such fine art. They can write down the title and author's name and check on line or with their favorite bookstore. OR - simply they can simply
remember the title, "Hawk Dancer," spell it as one word and add www and dot-com to see my web site for thier own copies of these books. In this way you
become a cooperator in spreading the Good News and the work of the priests and brothers dedicated in vows to poromoting the Gospel Message via the press
and all other forms of modern media and communications technology.
I have had excellent reluts with a parchment styled card stock. Major office supply stores offer a wide range of printable
stock for desk top printers. Seeing as the original cover desings by Kathy Johnson, the official illustrator for Johsua's novels, are hand painted acrylic, you
might invest a tad bit more into the project and pick up some canvase relief textured paper suitable for home and office computer printers. (N.B., Kathy
Johnson's signature initials are on Cloudburst's cover; a definite plus in displaying these pictures.)
