Kathy Johnson produced
over 30 magnificent artistic interpretations for the novel, Hawk Dancer. 14 of
her pieces are included in the book.
Top left: Peace Shield - Peace Shield keepers were sometimes called to battle to seek a
peaceful resolve.
Top right: Two canoes are loaded down with manoomin (wild rice), cedar and blankets. The caption
from the book states, "He had two canoes with him and said he had to go home. Hazel and I helped
him shove off from the riverbank."

2nd left: The Hawk Dance - The caption reads, "Richard felt him self rise up off the ground, …
Voices calling out to him from a great distance bid him to rise higher in the sky. Circling
hawks were talking to him, though he could not understand their language."
2nd right: Floral bouquet - A description of some flowers laid into a casket states, "A woven
bouquet of dried sacred herbs and fresh flowers lay under her bare feet."
********
3rd left Lady Dancer: "Ahead of him Hazel was stepping to the cadence marked out by her husband.
She held out the ends of her summer shawl and moved towards Jacob, circled around him and then
followed him in the dance."
3rd right: A basket of herbs and a candle depicts some of the materials gathered by the Medicine
Man to pray of a terminally ill boy.

Bottom left: Dressing Bird & Drum Skin. Meymahongebe is a beautiful mystical bird with butterfly
wings. The caption during a healing reads, "[Dressing Bird] flew off the illuminated drum skin
and to the fire altar and then entered the flames. Jamie's voice, the voice of the drum and the
flame filled Dressing-Bird with life."
Bottom right: Orthodox and Eastern Churches may use wedding crowns as part of the marriage
ceremony. The caption from the book reads, "The traditional wedding crowns ordered for the
wedding did not arrive on time, so crowns were woven of willow branches and decorated with small
feathers and beads."
Artistic decorating tip: Purchase both novels from Publish America and Save $12.00. Scan both covers into your computer paint shop or photo shop.
Resize the pictures to about 8 x 10 inches and save at 200 to 300 dpi. Print on durable card stock or photo paper and frame, or tack on the wall as a minuature
frameless poster. (Art work, by the way, is by Kathy Johnson.)
Both prints compliment pracitcally any decor. They are particularly suited for parochial and ministry offices as a means to
promote cultural diversity, peace & justice issues, Native Ministry offices, schools and CCD class rooms. The make excellent framed or un framed prints
for use at at home. The natural look of birch bark found in the northern pristine forests can hardly clash with current or projected decorating. At the
same time, the floral design stands out in an unabtrusive manner complimenting contemporary and tradition tastes.
Have a freind work on this for you if you don't have personal access to a scaner or computer. The printing cost at home or
office should easly be under a dollar, or two at the most.
Not only will you be satisfied with the results, it is a way to tell others about the books should they ask you where you
obtained such fine art. They can write down the title and author's name and check on line or with their favorite bookstore. OR - simply they can simply
remember the title, "Hawk Dancer," spell it as one word and add www and dot-com to see my web site for thier own copies of these books. In this way you
become a cooperator in spreading the Good News and the work of the priests and brothers dedicated in vows to poromoting the Gospel Message via the press
and all other forms of modern media and communications technology.
I have had excellent reluts with a parchment styled card stock. Major office supply stores offer a wide range of printable
stock for desk top printers. Seeing as the original cover desings by Kathy Johnson, the official illustrator for Johsua's novels, are hand painted acrylic, you
might invest a tad bit more into the project and pick up some canvase relief textured paper suitable for home and office computer printers. (N.B., Kathy
Johnson's signature initials are on Cloudburst's cover; a definite plus in displaying these pictures.)
[Ps: Some of Bro. Joshua's art work found on these pages are availble as prints for home or office. Contact the author for details. It is not
recomended to copy pictures from this site as they are uploaded at low resolutions and will become beome very grainy if you attempt to enlarge them for home or
office use. Besides, all the art shown on these pages by kathy Johnson and by Bro. Joshua Seidl are copyrighted. Contact the author if you would
like him to print quality high resolution prints from his originals for you.]
